Adoptive parents, John and Cheryl

Dear Birthmother,

For years we have prayed to have children and our heart is filled with thanksgiving for the opportunity to adopt and to be considered by you as possibly parents for your child. It would be our joy to send pictures and stories as your child grows and matures, if you’d be comfortable. We have a strong faith and look forward to sharing our values with your child.

We have been married for 26 years and have not been able to have a child biologically. Fortunately children have always been a part of our lives, having many nieces, nephews and cousins. We were very involved in our Goddaughter’s life as she grew up. We enjoyed being there for her and she has become a beautiful young lady. Cheryl is a former youth pastor and the current director and minister of Children’s Church. John continues to mentor young people in sports while instilling in them the importance of education and high moral standards. We believe it is now God’s timing for us to bring a child into our home through adoption.

And did we mention sports? There’s not a sporting event that we don’t watch. Most of our trips within the country include going to the local stadium to catch a ballgame. We go to New York for the Broadway shows. We travel abroad with family and friends to very beautiful and exciting places. One of our favorite trips was on safari in Kenya. John later returned to Africa with his brother and cousin and climbed Mount Kilimanjaro.

Cheryl is active in the Children’s Church and sings in the choirOur Values:
Church is an important part of our lives and we are both active members. John serves on several committees while Cheryl is active in the Children’s Church and sings in the choir. We also participate in Bible study.

We understand the importance of taking care of ourselves. We eat healthy, exercise frequently at the local YMCA and in our home gym, and retreat to our house in the desert when we need to get away from the big city. John loves to garden while Cheryl loves to sing. John enjoys playing baseball (not softball) while Cheryl journals or enjoys a good book for therapy.

When we introduced ourselves we realized we had many friends in common so it never seemed like we were strangers. We’ve been together ever since. John is a successful attorney with his own lucrative law firm and Cheryl works in finance with a large entertainment company. Cheryl looks forward to being a stay-at-home mom after we adopt.

Our Families:
We both come from large, extended, multi-racial families. Adoption is already a part of our family. We get together many times a year (and always on holidays) to share our joys, our triumphs and yes, sometimes our failures. We love to laugh and have fun with family and friends! For anyone who comes to our gatherings, they find the laughter to be contagious.

John and Cheryl have a large, extended, multi-racial familyThere are many success stories in our family: lawyers, writers, nurses, scientists, a professional singer and recording artist, an architect, many educators, business owners, and devoted homemakers. The one special characteristic that best defines our family is loyalty. We are always there for each other.

Our Home:
We live in a wonderful neighborhood of Southern California which is just blocks away from a large park with hiking trails and horseback riding. It’s spacious with large living quarters including three bedrooms and five bathrooms. The front and back yards John and Cheryl's home in Californiaare beautifully landscaped and serene. We are collectors of African-American artwork that adorns the house and grabs everyone’s attention. We are also proud of the fact that it was built by the famous African-American architect, Paul Williams. Our home is generally the gathering place for family get-togethers. Most importantly, it’s warm, full of love and God’s presence.

Our Promise:
First and foremost, we promise your child will know he or she is loved and cherished. Your child will be raised in a Christian home and we look forward to sharing the love of Jesus with them. He or she will receive the very best education while learning the old fashion values of hard work, honesty, integrity and respect for others. We will teach the importance of putting God first and the power of prayer. Your child will be introduced to the arts aJohn and Cheryl are excited to adopt!nd cultural events as well as individual and team sports. We will encourage your child’s talents and interests. They will be surrounded with love and laughter and taught how to make the most in life.
