What is the Adoption Process in Minnesota?

Lifetime Adoption coordinators have been helping expectant mothers in Minnesota navigate the adoption process for over 35 years. Just call, text, or fill out our online form. A Lifetime coordinator will answer any questions, listen to your concerns, and give you the information you need to make the right choices for you and your baby.

If you decide adoption is the right choice for you and your baby, you will then choose a family or families to get to know. Check out Lifetime’s adoptive family profiles. Perhaps you want a family that lives in Minnesota or another state. If there is a particular race or religion you would prefer the family be, you can choose that, too. It is up to you to decide which is the right family for your baby. If you are parenting a toddler or older child and it is not a healthy situation, it is important to know that adoption isn’t only for newborns. Lifetime Adoption coordinators can help create an adoption plan for you and your child. A professional counselor will work with you to create a healthy transition plan for you, your child, and the adoptive family. She can also help create a post-adoption contact agreement if you would like.

The hospital plan is another important part of the adoption process if you place your baby for adoption. Your coordinator will help you decide things such as who will be in the delivery room during labor and delivery, who will hold the baby first, and other hospital stay details. She will then share your hospital plan with the adoptive family and the hospital staff, so everyone understands their roles. An adoption attorney will also be available to you at no cost. Your adoption attorney will make sure you understand your legal rights and will handle all the paperwork and court hearing.

Open Adoption in Minnesota

How does modern, open adoption work today? People don’t often know that today, birth parents make all the decisions. The birth parents choose the adoptive parents and what kind of contact they want in the future. An adoption plan is created to meet the needs of you and your baby. Your coordinator will gather information such as:

  • Is there a certain religion or lifestyle you are looking for in a family?
  • What type and how much contact do you want in the future?
  • How do you see your hospital stay going?
  • Do you have any pregnancy-related expenses you need help with?

Adoption can be an amazing gift to your child, and it doesn’t mean saying goodbye to them forever. In an open adoption, you will be able to watch your child thrive through updates and pictures and even have a visit once or twice a year. We have many birth mothers who have close relationships with their child’s adoptive families. Not too long ago, one of our amazing birth mothers was getting married, and she asked her daughter to be there.  She was not only there, but the adoptive parents were there as well, and the adoptive father even walked the bride down the aisle.

Adoption Laws in Minnesota

Minnesota adoption laws can seem confusing, but don’t worry. Your Lifetime Adoption coordinator will recommend an adoption attorney in Minnesota who will walk you through the legal adoption process.

In Minnesota, the timeline for legal documentation for adoption is as follows.

In Minnesota, consent can be given no sooner than 72 hours after the birth of a child and no later than 60 days after the child’s placement in a prospective adoptive home. A birth parent’s consent may be withdrawn for any reason within ten working days after the consent is executed and acknowledged. On the day following the 10th working day after execution and acknowledgment, the consent shall become irrevocable.

Minnesota, like every other state, has its own unique laws that must be followed before the finalization of the adoption. Minnesota may have different legal requirements for different adoption scenarios. Depend on your Minnesota adoption attorney to make sure all legal aspects are completed.

Minnesota Home Studies

A home study is a legal document that is required by every state. It shows that adoptive parents have the ability to parent and care for a child. Your Lifetime Adoption coordinator will recommend a qualified home study provider in Minnesota. You will be required to get or provide:

  • A background check
  • Medical and social history
  • Financial Statements
  • Knowledge of adoption issues, including, matters relating to cross-cultural, interracial, and special needs adoptions
