What is the Adoption Process in Nevada?

Lifetime Adoption coordinators have worked with expectant mothers and guided them through the adoption process in Nevada since 1986. Just call, text, or fill out our online form. You will find the support you need to make the right choice for you and your baby.

If it turns out adoption is the right decision for you and your baby, what is your next step? Your first step is to fill out your forms online. Next, a coordinator will help you can start looking for a family. You can view Lifetime adoptive family profiles online, and your coordinator can suggest some families she feels will be a good match. You may want a family from Nevada or close by or maybe from another state. You may want a family with certain interests or hobbies or perhaps a family of a certain race or religion. You decide what matters.

So what if you are struggling to parent a toddler or older child, or child with special needs? Or what if CPS is involved and considering removing your child from your care? Lifetime coordinators can help you create an adoption plan so you still have a say in who will adopt and raise your child. A professional counselor will get to know your child and create a transition plan at no cost to you. This will help your child, you along with the adoptive family move forward in a healthy way. She can also create a post-adoption contact plan for you and the family that is best for the child.

Thinking about labor and delivery can be stressful when placing your newborn for adoption. Creating a hospital plan can relieve a lot of your anxiety. Who you want in the room with you, who will hold the baby first, and all other details can be worked out ahead of time. Your coordinator will share your wishes with the hospital and the adoptive parents.

Open Adoption in Nevada

Adoption is very different today than it was years ago. Most people don’t know this and don’t know about modern adoption. Today it is the birth parents who are in control. They choose the adoptive family and can choose a family open to the amount of contact they want in the future. To create an adoption plan for you and your baby, your coordinator will gather information such as:

  • What are the traits and characteristics you are looking for in a family?
  • What is your ideal amount of contact in the future?
  • What are your preferences for your hospital stay?
  • Are you in need of help with pregnancy-related expenses?

When you choose adoption for your child, you are making a loving, brave and difficult choice. It can be a comfort to know that open adoption means you don’t have to say goodbye to your child forever. You can receive pictures, and updates, share on social media and even visits. Many of our birth mothers have wonderful relationships with their child’s adoptive families. Recently, one of our birth mothers was getting married, and she asked if her daughter could be there. She was not only there, but the adoptive parents were there as well, and the adoptive father even walked the bride down the aisle.

Help With Pregnancy Expenses and More

Lisa contacted Lifetime to get information about placing her baby for adoption. She was homeless and did not want her baby to grow up as she did. Now, she had additional pregnancy-related expenses and did not know what to do. Her Lifetime coordinator let her know that in the state of Nevada, pregnancy-related expenses may be handled by the adopting parents. In Nevada, the adoptive parents may pay the medical and other living expenses related to the birth of a child as long as the payment is not contingent upon the birth parent’s placement of the child for adoption or consent to the adoption of the child.

  • Lifestyle
  • Reasons for adopting
  • Home and neighborhood
  • Values and religious beliefs

Adoption Laws in Nevada

Nevada adoption laws must be followed, and all legal paperwork filed so you will have an adoption attorney referred to you by your coordinator.

In Nevada, the timeline for legal documentation for adoption is as follows.

In general, the written consent of the birth mother cannot be signed until at least 72 hours after the baby is born birth. Rely on your Nevada adoption attorney for all the legal details.

Nevada Home Studies

A home study is a legal document that is required by every state, which shows your ability to parent and care for a child. Your Lifetime coordinator will recommend a qualified Nevada home study provider.

With a home study, be prepared to provide the following along with other documentation:

  • A written application
  • A copy of your fingerprints
  • An interview and assessment with the home study professional
  • A home visit to confirm the home is suitable
  • A review of any reports or investigations regarding the abuse or neglect of a child by the adoptive family or any member of the household who is 18 or older
  • A review of any State and Federal records of criminal history member of the adoptive family’s household who is age 18 or older
  • A review of at least five references from people who have known the adoptive family for no less than two years, with no more than two of the references being from family members
  • A medical report of the adoptive family
  • Review of records regarding marriage, divorce, and the death of a spouse
Whether you are adopting or placing your child for adoption in Nevada, a Lifetime Adoption coordinator is ready to work with you and provide the information and support you need for a successful adoption journey.
