“Courage in our Hearts™: A Family’s Love Story” is a story that shines with the qualities of hope and possibility. Without these cornerstones embedded in their hearts, Alex and Raz Stephen could not have embarked on a monumental quest. Together, in the face of challenging life experiences, they, individually and as a couple, chose to grow certain characteristics in their personalities that other people facing a similar situation might not have chosen.
I recently had the pleasure of interviewing this couple. They had a willingness to face the unknown, not knowing what the future would hold when they traveled to a different country, not knowing how they would survive once here, and not having any idea of how they would handle the cultural or financial transaction. If we are honest with ourselves and view our lives in retrospection, we will find that we have run from the unknown, focused on a chasm of what might happen, and tried to control the future by thinking, ‘I am only going as far as I can see.’ And when we live by that creed, we take tiny steps instead of giant steps.
This family didn’t shrink when summoned to engage the world. They were explorers on an adventure, a family releasing the controls of the outcome. Instead, they opened to allowing an attitude of gratitude to be the mighty tide to carry them into their destiny. Together, Alex and Raz embraced the moment with a sense of wonder, of mystery, of joy to whatever the journey would bring, as long as they were together, embracing the mission of seeking a quality education for themselves and their Deaf child.
Along the way, each member of the family, from the parents to the children, Larry and Charisma, had to develop courage, a belief in themselves and the strength that they could accomplish whatever they set out to achieve, not allowing any person or thing to overshadow their goals.
Diversity is what makes the Stephen family unique and strong. They live diversity in terms of their religion, in terms of their son marrying a young woman from Singapore, in terms of a non-speaking child and one who does speak, and in terms of a non-hearing child and a child who hears. The Stephens are very rich in the celebration of their faiths, individually and collectively. Most families cannot make this claim.
Theirs is more than a love story; it is a story of hope, commitment, resiliency and embracing diversity.
This book is a lifesaver, a life changer. An incredible love story, it paints an unforgettable portrait of what is possible when two people decide to create an awesome life for their child. It is a story of courage, faith and determination. A vibrant illustration of never giving up, Courage in our Hearts™ is transformative. Open it, and take your life to the next level!
