When your new baby comes home, you will want to feed him the healthiest foods available, so he will have the best start in life. Before the end of his first year, your baby will transition to blended foods and then on to solids. This time can be very confusing. Should you buy organic foods or does it matter? Organic foods can be incredibly expensive, but we have to question whether foods grown with pesticides can harm our children. It is a dilemma that all Mothers have faced.

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) has published a study that breaks down foods into two categories. One list names the foods that contain the most pesticide residues. Experts suggest that these foods be purchased organic, whenever possible:

  • Potatoes
  • Sweet bell peppers
  • Grapes
  • Spinach
  • Peaches
  • Apples
  • Strawberries
  • Nectarines

The second list includes produce that contains the lowest amounts of pesticides. They can be purchased in the “regular”, less expensive side of the grocery store. It could save you money and give you some peace of mind, as well!

  • Kiwi
  • Cabbage
  • Eggplant
  • Cantaloupe
  • Mango
  • Sweet peas
  • Asparagus

In addition, ask your health care practitioner for guidelines to help you keep your baby healthy and happy. He/she will provide you with a time line that outlines the transitions from a liquid to a solid diet. You can also receive information on food allergies and other safety advice.
