Adoption is one of the greatest blessings my husband and I have ever experienced. People look at our family and marvel at the love we share. They say our adopted children act like us. They comment on how much they look like us. To the outside world, it must look as if we move through the world with ease and smoothness. Some are thinking we must have been very lucky for our adoption to turn out so well.

What others don’t understand; what they can’t see from looking on the surface is all the positioning, preparation and planning that went into our “luck”. We worked very hard to set up a situation that called for success. We persevered and didn’t give up, even when things felt too difficult to keep going. My husband and I had hope that our future included a family and that God’s hand was upon that plan. Who were we to throw in the towel?

Before you are ready to carry out your vision, three areas in life must be in order: your mind, your heart, and your environment. When these three zones are in place, adoption success is sure to follow. Doors will open and miracles will happen. Don’t let uncertainty paralyze you! If our Heavenly Father is guiding you, He will always provide a way to see His plan come to pass.

Have you made the decision to adopt? To be positioned for success, your hearts need to be in the right place. Do you believe that God has called you to adoption? You might want to consider praying for success and dedicate your adoption journey to the Lord. Let Him take control over the process. When your head says it can’t be done, let your heart take the reins. In 1 Corinthians 14:33 we learn that “God is not the author of confusion but of peace.”

Next, set your mind fully on the goal and the task ahead. Read up adoption. Go to the library or bookstore to check out the latest information. Look up sites on line. What are others saying about adoption? Seek out friends that have been through the process. Have them give you pointers on what to do and what not to do. Talk to your adoption professional to know what to expect. How can you best position your family to appeal to perspective birth mothers? How can you show your family in their best and true light? Discuss with your family what you envision. Be clear about what you do and don’t want. Acquaint yourselves with adoption laws and rights in your state. Learn as much as you can, before delving into the middle of the adoption process. Knowledge is the key.

Finally, set up your environment to encourage a smooth and successful adoption. Prepare your home for the new baby: baby proof, decorate, and purchase what you need for baby’s homecoming. Make sure you have thoroughly read all contracts and legal papers. Never rush or skip over this important aspect of the journey. Do your part in the best way that you can. Get professional pictures for your profile. Have multiple people review it for you and give ideas. Make sure that you are available, when a birth mother calls. You may want to have a special phone number set up. Be confident that all your ducks are in a row, by preparing your external environment to the best of your ability.

Are you positioned for adoption success? Are you willing to sacrifice and persevere? Adoption is an institution, sanctioned by God. Your future is bright when you are willing to realize God’s plan for your family. Someday, others will comment on how “lucky” you are. You will smile to yourself and know that “luck” had nothing to do with it!
