“I was shocked to find out that my 17 year old daughter is 3 months pregnant. So many thoughts are going through us all. I want to be there for her, but I also want her to use her unplanned pregnancy as a chance to think about her future as well as the future of her child. How can I help her learn about adoption?”
It definitely is such a mixed experience for the whole family when a teen becomes pregnant. To help you both better understand open adoption today, Lifetime Adoption can mail you a free packet about adoption. Inside our Adoption Planning Kit are materials that share about how adoption works: a short book, a magazine, a DVD, and brochures. Just call us at 1-800-923-6784 to request the free packet, or visit this link: Adoption Planning Kit. Once you get the kit, you can go over these materials with your daughter when the time is right.
Parents do have a big impact on their teen’s opinion of adoption. According to unplannedgood.org, young women are 50% MORE likely to make an adoption plan when the trusted adult in their life suggests it to them. Open and understanding conversations are the place to start, even if you’ve never had a very open dialogue with your daughter about sex, pregnancy, or her situation before.
The fact is, many pregnant teens think they only have two choices: to raise a baby, or to choose abortion. After you listen to your daughter’s thoughts, ask her if she’s thought about adoption and if she’s open to considering it. Remember, you can’t force her to choose adoption; you can’t force her into any one of her options. The reality is she has the say over what happens to her baby. By learning the truth about adoption and the realities of all of her options, together, you’ll be able to make the right plan.
You both can learn about open adoption together, and even browse waiting adoptive families, while you decide what to do. It’s never too late to choose adoption, so if you need time to think things over, take it. At Lifetime we encourage women of any age to make informed decisions; if you or your daughter want to talk or set up counseling call anytime: 1.800.923.6784.
One more thing: there are educational scholarships available for women who do choose adoption for a child. The Lifetime Foundation supports women who want to create a future for themselves while they give a bright future to their child through open adoption.
