Pregnant and Considering Adoption in Oklahoma

Pregnancy Adoption Services in Oklahoma

If you were not expecting to be pregnant but that pregnancy test comes back positive it can feel overwhelming. What do you do now? You may keep the news to yourself or you may tell the baby’s father, your family, or friends. You will probably get many different reactions. This can be hard to cope with.

Don’t react until you have all the information you need. There are options you may not know a lot about and a Lifetime Adoption coordinator can help you understand your choices. You can call, text, or fill out our online form, and a kind adoption coordinator will be there to provide the information and support you need. She can get you the resources you need and the services of a professional or peer counselor.

What is the Adoption Process in Oklahoma?

For over thirty years, Lifetime Adoption has been guiding birth mothers in Oklahoma through the adoption process. Just call, text, or fill out our online form. A caring Lifetime coordinator will listen and give you all the information and resources you need.

You can look through adoptive family profiles and pick adoptive families you think are the right fit for you and your baby. You may want a family from Oklahoma or from a different state. You can meet families open to the contact you feel you want now and in the future. Adoption isn’t just for newborns, as well. If you have a toddler or older child you think may benefit by being placed for adoption, Lifetime can help. A professional counselor will work with you to create a transition plan for you, and your child. She will also help you create a post-adoption contact agreement that works for everyone, most importantly, the child.

If you are pregnant and have decided on adoption, a hospital plan will be important. Your adoption coordinator will help create a plan that will document who you want with you in the delivery room, who you would like to hold and feed the baby first, and other decisions. You also will have your own attorney, at no cost to you.

Open Adoption in Oklahoma

If you ask most people what modern, open adoption entails, they probably won’t know. Today, birth mothers decide who will adopt their baby, what kind of contact to have in the future, and other options. Your Lifetime Adoption coordinator will help create an adoption plan for you and your baby. She will ask:

  • What characteristics are important to you in an adoptive family?
  • What kind of contact would you like to have with the family in the future?
  • Are there pregnancy-related expenses or resources you need help with?

For every child, there is an adoptive family wanting to grow their family through adoption. It is a loving and courageous choice to place your child for adoption. Modern adoption does not mean saying goodbye to your child forever anymore. Instead, you can stay in touch via updates, pictures, and even occasional visits. Many of our adoptive families keep a close relationship with their birth mother, birth father, and even grandparents of their child. Recently, one of our amazing birth mothers was getting married, and she asked if her daughter could attend. She was not only there, but the adoptive parents were there as well, and the adoptive father even walked the bride down the aisle.

Adoption Laws in Oklahoma

Oklahoma adoption laws must be followed exactly so your Lifetime Adoption coordinator will refer you to an Oklahoma adoption attorney who will help you navigate the legal process.

In Oklahoma, the timeline for legal documentation for adoption is as follows.

In general, a birth mother and birth father sign relinquishment papers anytime after the birth. The adoption is irrevocable upon acceptance by the court.

A home study is a requirement before the finalization of the adoption and legal issues may vary due to individual circumstances. Depend on your Oklahoma adoption attorney to make sure all legal aspects are in place.

Oklahoma Home Studies

A home study is required by the courts and is a legal document that demonstrates the adoptive family’s ability to parent and care for a baby. Your Lifetime Adoption coordinator will refer you to a qualified home study provider in Oklahoma.

With a home study be prepared to provide the following

  • Background checks
  • Two personal visits, at least two of which are in the home
  • Interviews with each parent and any school-aged or above children in the home
  • Medical reports
  • Employment verification
  • Three written references
  • Education requirements

You will be asked your reasons for wanting to adopt, what your lifestyle is like, what support system you have, what your parenting style is, your education level, and more. There will then be post-placement visits. There will be one post-placement visit to view the child in the adoptive home.

Whether you are hoping to adopt or are a parent considering placing your child for adoption, Lifetime Adoption looks forward to working with you and providing the information and support you need for successful adoption.
