Hopeful adoptive parents Al and Laura preparing food togetherI recently had the opportunity to chat with Al and Laura, hopeful adoptive parents who live in Ohio. When you’re thinking about adoption for your child, you’re able to talk to hopeful adoptive parents before making your decision. By chatting with them and asking them questions, you can get the full picture of the adoptive couple as potential parents to your baby.

I asked Al and Laura some fun questions that you won’t find in their adoption profile, and I learned that they are a fun-loving, active couple who have been happily married for 14 years. They enjoy lifting weights at the gym, taking their dogs for a walk, and doing escape rooms together. Al and Laura can’t wait to adopt their first child!

Al and Laura share, “We’re so excited to begin our adoption journey, and to give a baby a safe and loving home…We are open to staying in contact through texts, photos, and visits, whichever way you feel most comfortable with.”

1.   What is your favorite holiday and why?

Al: For me, my favorite holiday has to be Christmas. I am frequently competing with Laura’s mother about who loves Christmas more.

I love spending time with family, seeing people open the gifts we got for them. I especially enjoy making unique or personalized gifts; one year I made a Guess Who style game for Laura’s mum. Christmas is also special because of what it really represents, which is the birth of Jesus.

Laura: My favorite holiday is also Christmas, celebrating Jesus’ birth. We do a lot of family things leading up to the day, like going to a horse-drawn carriage parade, cutting down our own Christmas tree, and having a baking day at my parents’ house.

2. What is your favorite sport to play?

Al: My favorite sports are anything with a racquet—tennis, table tennis (ping pong), squash, badminton, and recently, pickleball. I especially like doubles, so I can play with Laura. Doubles is a little less running (as you share the court), so I don’t tire out too quickly. This way, I can enjoy playing with others longer.

I also played football (soccer) growing up, so I love any time I get to do that. I also make sure to watch the England national team playing whenever there is a World Cup or Euro Cup tournament.

3. What is your ideal vacation?

Laura: My ideal vacation would be with family, and we would bring our two dogs if we can. My favorite places are the mountains or a hilly countryside, where we could stay at a cabin or old farmhouse, play games, cook together, and do some local shopping.

Al: For me, the ideal vacation is more about the people I am sharing it with. I love the mountains, the beach, or the country. As long as I’m spending it with the people I love. I am happy to go out and explore the sights, but my preference would be to stay in the cabin reading or playing board games (and hopefully get some swimming in).

4. What is your favorite thing to cook? Please share the story behind it!

Laura: Ooh, I’m having a hard time narrowing it down to just one. I guess my favorite thing to cook tends to be trying out something new, like a different curry or some sort of rice-based dish. There are a few recipes that I go back to, though, and one of those is making a pot of chili.

When Al and I were first married and still living on campus at our university, I found an America’s Test Kitchen recipe booklet on cooking for two. They had a basic chili recipe in there, and we both really liked it.

5. What is something from your childhood that you want to make sure your child gets to experience?

Laura: We went on family vacations most years growing up, typically to the same place so it felt like a home away from home. My parents always made it a fun experience, packing in as many things to see and do as possible. I would love to do the same for our kids and make great memories together.

Al: I think there is a huge benefit to traveling to other countries and seeing different cultures. Growing up I got to travel to Mexico, Portugal, Greece, as well as several other countries in Europe. I would absolutely want my child(ren) to have the same opportunity.
