I recently had the opportunity to chat with James and Lauren, hopeful adoptive parents who live in North Carolina. When you’re thinking about adoption for your child, you’re able to talk to hopeful adoptive parents before making your decision. By chatting with them and asking them questions, you can get the full picture of the adoptive couple as potential parents to your baby.
I asked James and Lauren some fun questions that you won’t find in their adoption profile, and I learned that they are a baseball-loving Catholic couple who have been happily married for 11 years. Lauren is a teacher of the deaf and hard-of-hearing, and James is a Project Manager for a startup. James and Lauren can’t wait to expand their family through adoption!
James and Lauren share, “We are looking forward to getting to know you, and we welcome an open adoption…We love being parents and are so ready to be parents again to another child.”
1. What is your favorite holiday?
Lauren: My favorite holiday is Christmas. I love all the traditions my parents had and the traditions we have started as a family of three!
Every year we drive around to see Christmas lights on houses while drinking hot chocolate and listening to Christmas music. Our family also does a card contest. We vote on who has the funniest card. We also go to Christmas Eve mass and have a big dinner afterward.
2. What was your first job? Did you like it?
James: My first job was cutting my neighbors’ yards. I loved the look in the end but at that time, I didn’t appreciate the process. I’ve always been a person who gravitates toward before and after photos. That could be home renovation shows, weight loss photos, haircuts, or any dramatic change. I’ve always been a sucker for it.
When you take a yard that looks unruly, and you’re able to give back and make it look great again or inject it with new life. That’s what I love. Even though the work was hard, the final result made it worth every minute I spent doing it.

3. What is your favorite thing to cook or eat? Please share the story behind it!
Lauren: Chicken Marsala, mashed potatoes, and asparagus with buster bar cake for dessert are special things to eat. Growing up, my grandma and mom made this meal a lot.
Both have since passed away, and we eat this meal on the anniversary of my mom’s death. It reminds me of her and the love she had for us.
4. What would a perfect day look like?
Lauren: A perfect day would be spent with family and friends at a lake house in the mountains.
We would go hiking, tubing, and boating. We would have a big cookout in the evening and play outdoor games like wiffleball, hide-n-seek, cornhole, or kickball afterward. We would watch the sunset and roast s’mores over a fire under the stars.
5. What advice would you give yourself at age 15?
James: I would say be true to yourself. Throughout your life, you will constantly be pulled by people who don’t have your best interests at heart. Remember, you’re loved by God and by your family. Trust yourself to do the right thing and be confident in that choice. Choose guilt over resentment. Therefore, it’s better to be guilty that you resisted pressure vs. being resentful that you did something that wasn’t a true reflection of your character.
