It is that time of year again! We wake up at six am to get ready for work and the sky is as black as pitch. It becomes harder and harder to drag yourself out from under the warm and cozy covers to face another dark morning. Everyone seems to be walking around in a fog. The sunny smiles of the well-rested are vague at best.

Never fear, November 4th concludes daylight saving time and you can enjoy another hour of shut eye. There will actually be hint of sunrise when your alarm goes off in the morning. Whether you agree with the concept of daylight savings or not, that extra hour feels like a magical gift. Just when the fall routine has lost its’ luster, we are all given a little treat to keep us going until Thanksgiving.

If you are one of those people that is chronically sleep deprived, you might want to look around your bedroom and turn off any electronics. A dark room brings on the production of melatonin in the body. This key hormone helps bring on a peaceful nights’ sleep. Night lights, computer screens, and digital alarm clocks can interfere with the bodies’ natural sleep rhythms and cycles.

Try a warm glass of milk with nutmeg before bed and adhere to a consistent sleep schedule. Whether it is day light savings or not, a regular bedtime hour will help you fall asleep faster and sleep deeper. The warm milk contains 85 mg. of tryptophan. This vital amino acid is converted to serotonin in the body and helps provide a good night’s rest. Nutmeg acts as a mild sedative and relaxant. Combined, these two yummy foods welcome the sandman with open arms.

Enjoy your extra hour of sleep this week!
