Waiting to Adopt: Geoff and Tracy’s Journey to Adoption

by | Feb 26, 2019 | Adoptive Families Blog

Geoff and Tracy with their daughterGeoff and Tracy from Texas know what it’s like to wait for a birth mother to choose them. They have been married for almost 20 years, and after spending years trying unsuccessfully to get pregnant, they decided to pursue adoption. Many families decide to adopt instead of undergoing fertility treatments, and Geoff and Tracy did the same.

Tracy was the first one to bring up adoption. At first, Geoff wasn’t ready. He wanted to wait and see if they could have a baby on their own. He was also enjoying his life as it was, with travel and his job. But, as time went on their hearts began to wish more for a baby and Geoff came around to the idea of adoption.

He says it was over the course of one very spiritual weekend that he felt deeply drawn to adopt a baby. This came about as Geoff turned to God for guidance. He read some scriptures and came across a passage that talked about how pure religion is expressed by caring for others in times of need.

Geoff and Tracy's daughterHe heard a voice inside of him asking him if he could open his home to a child. He decided that weekend he could and told Tracy he was ready. When they decided to move forward they started by listening to our podcast, Let’s Talk Adoption. Tracy researched every type of adoption from international to foster care, and she kept coming back to Lifetime Adoption’s website. She says all of the information available on the site gave her a lot of comfort. The couple decided to go with domestic adoption.

They developed a positive view on birth mothers through the process. Geoff and Tracy see birth mothers as incredibly honorable women. The couple has huge hearts of compassion for birth mothers after seeing how much courage and strength it takes to carry a baby for nine months and then place it with a family. Their adoption process made them incredibly appreciative of the opportunities that birth mothers give to adoptive families.

Tracy and Geoff’s faith played a huge role in their adoption journey. When they finally were ready to say yes, they experienced elation and joy as they arranged their lives to live through God’s love and care that He has for humanity. They had a deep-rooted desired to be parents, but their faith guided their decision to adopt.

Geoff and Tracy and their daughter, AbigailGeoff mentioned to us how grateful he is for Tracy not pressuring him into moving forward with adoption. He had some initial fears about the responsibility, and the kind of father he would be, that he needed to work through on his own before he was ready. Once they made the decision, it became an exciting and spiritual journey for them.

They understood that the timing of their adoption was in God’s hands. They continued in prayer and updated their profiles, and did everything in faith. Their advice to families who are waiting is to recognize that stress and anxiety are going to happen because adopting a baby is new and scary, but it’s not part of the process. God loves you and wants you to be happy. He is not going to give you anything you can’t handle.
