8 Simple Tips on Building an Affordable Maternity Wardrobe

maternity wardrobe.jpgYou probably don’t want to have to spend to a ton of cash on new clothes, since you won’t be pregnant forever. But, it’s good to enhance and add to your wardrobe a bit to fit your growing belly.

When it comes to dressing your bump, there’s no right or wrong way to go about it. But, today we wanted to share how you can build your wardrobe with affordable maternity clothes!

Here are our 8 tips and tricks to creating an affordable maternity wardrobe:

1. Extend the Use of What You Have
Extend the life of your regular wardrobe by getting some button extenders for your jeans and pants. Also, get a belly band that’ll hold up your unzipped pants (belly bands also cover the gap between your shirt and your waistband!) There are even bra extenders out there if you’re seeing that your 34B needs to be a 38B.

2. Check Your Closet
Most women already have stuff that could make it through their entire pregnancy. Think maxi dresses, cardigans, loose shirts, and yoga pants. We suggest you pull these items out and then pack away items you know won’t fit you pretty soon. Your too-small clothes are just going to take up space in your closet, and remind you of your expanding body.

3. Wear Comfy Clothing
Yoga pants and leggings will become your best friend! If you’re experiencing some not-so-fun pregnancy symptoms like nausea and back pain, you probably just want to feel comfortable. “I lived in black yoga pants, a purple t-shirt, and a stretchy hoodie during my pregnancy, especially during the last few months!” one birth mother told us.

4. Choose Your Go-To Colors
So that everything can mix and match, it’s smart to choose clothes that are in neutral colors (like black, white, gray, and tan). It’s nice to be able to mix and match if you pick your colors and stick to them. That way, you won’t end up spending a fortune on new items because the other stuff doesn’t match.

5. Buy the Basics
Head to Target, Wal-Mart or Old Navy to get some basic leggings, tank tops, shirts, and pants. All three stores are pretty fairly inexpensive. Having some colorful basics will add some spice to your outfits! Plus, you can wear all these basics after you deliver, too.

6. Shop at Thrift Stores
You can find some pretty stellar deals at consignment and thrift stores! If you live in a very rural area and there aren’t any thrift shops in your town, try some online ones like ThredUp.com or Swap.com. You can find stuff that was quickly outgrown or never worn!

7. Accept Hand-Me-Downs
If a friend or relative was recently pregnant, they might have some great maternity clothes to pass down to you. Things like dresses, jackets, and blazers are usually pricey and haven’t been worn very much, so you could really score with hand-me-downs.

8. Wear Accessories
Scarves, jewelry, and bags are great ways to change up your maternity wardrobe without having to spend a ton. And, you’ll be able to wear it again after you deliver. While we’re on the subject of accessories, go ahead and wear whichever shoes make you the most comfortable.
