Hopeful adoptive parents Jamie and Bert gaze lovingly at each otherI recently had the chance to talk with Bert and Jamie, hopeful adoptive parents who live in Virginia. When considering adoption for your child, you have the opportunity to connect with hopeful adoptive parents before making your decision. These conversations allow you to ask questions, hear their stories, and truly get to know an adoptive couple…helping you envision what life could be like for your baby in their home.

I asked Bert and Jamie some fun questions that you won’t find in their adoption profile, and I learned that they’re a fun, smart couple who are excited to share their love for education and beach vacations with a child. Together, they enjoy cookouts, bike rides, golfing, bowling, working out, and walking their dog.

They’re so happy to be on this path to adopting their first child. Bert and Jamie share, “After a few years of trying to have a baby without success, we both agreed adoption had been on our minds. We’re excited to be on this path to become adoptive parents and hope to get to know you through this process!”

I like music but couldn’t tell you who sings what.  I just listen to the radio and if I like a song, I’ll add it to my iTunes playlist.

2. What was the last thing that made you laugh?

Bert: The last thing that made me laugh was probably something our puppy did. We like to joke that our dog is broken because she’s really energetic and turns everything into some sort of game, even eating our socks and shoes.

She has a funny personality with a hundred different types of barks that keep us guessing what she is trying to tell or ask us for. She loves to run and play and is often very excitable over just about anything, including chewing Amazon boxes.

Jamie: Bert, I don’t remember exactly what he said, but he’s the funniest person I’ve ever met, and he makes me laugh every single day.

3. What is something from your childhood that you want to make sure your child gets to experience?

Bert: Every year, my family has a large reunion at the beach in South Carolina. There will be hundreds of cousins, uncles, aunts, and extended family members from my mother’s side. This was always a highlight of my year and something I would love to pass on to a child.

There are coloring contests, kickball games on the beach, sandcastle-building contests, and at least one large cookout. It’s always a great opportunity to see people we do not always get to see throughout the year.

Jamie: We would always go camping with my extended family a few times each year.  All of our aunts, uncles, and cousins would go.  There was this campground on a lake in South Carolina.  It had a little beach area where we would swim and play.  It also had a miniature golf course and tennis courts, so we had so much fun there.

My granddad had a pontoon boat, so they would take us out fishing and water skiing and inner tubing.  We had campfires and roasted marshmallows and would play games and cards. This was one of my happiest memories, and I want to share it with our child.

4. What did you want to be when you were a kid?

Bert: I think I always knew I wanted to be a teacher. I saw something that I wrote in third grade that said I couldn’t wait to become one. Maybe it’s because my parents were both teachers, so I was raised in a household that valued education and educators. The classroom is just where I’m at my best.

Jamie: I remember when I was in elementary school, I wanted to be a lawyer, then a judge, and then the first woman president.  My mom said I would argue with a tree stump, so I would make a great lawyer, lol.

Although, later on, I realized I did not like public speaking or being the center of attention, so becoming a lawyer was out.  I was always really focused on my education.  I remember wanting to be first in my class even when I was in kindergarten, and I graduated high school as the Valedictorian and ultimately became an aerospace engineer.

5. What is an important life lesson you’ve learned?

Our pastor was doing a sermon on God’s interventions behind the scenes in the book of Esther. With so many divinely inspired coincidences occurring in the story, it led him to the conclusion that, “God has the whole thing rigged.”

This is not to say that we can do what we want because God does what He wants to, but instead, as long as we are faithful, God has His hands on the situations in our lives, so we should not stress about them. This has led to a tremendous reduction in anxiety in our lives because we know who God is and that God controls everything, and as long as we trust God, we can trust that we are in the place He wants us to be.
