Have you just found out you are pregnant and it is unexpected? Is this unwelcome news and you feel parenting is not the right choice for you and your baby? Are you unsure what to do or where to turn? Have you shared your news with the baby’s father, your family, and even close friends, and are getting a lot of different opinions? This can leave you feeling more confused about what you should do.

Make sure you fully understand all of your options before deciding what to do. Talk to a Lifetime coordinator who has been helping expectant women for many years. She can go over all of your options and connect you with the resources you need. You can text, call, or fill out our online form, and a Lifetime Adoption coordinator will be there for you.

What is the Adoption Process in Massachusetts?

The staff at Lifetime Adoption are experts at helping expectant mothers in Massachusetts navigate the adoption process. Just call, text, or fill out our online form.

If adoption is the right choice for you and your baby, your next step will be to choose a family or families to speak with. Check out Lifetime adoptive family profiles. You may be looking for a family from Massachusetts or from another state. You may want a family of a certain race or lifestyle. You will choose the right family for your baby unless you prefer a Lifetime coordinator chooses for you. Know that if you are parenting a toddler or older child and it is not a safe or healthy situation, adoption isn’t just for newborns. Your Lifetime coordinator will create an adoption plan for you and your child. A professional counselor will create a transition plan for you, your child, and the adoptive family. Together you will create a post-adoption contact agreement. This will be healthy for everyone involved, most importantly, the child.

An important part of your adoption process is the hospital plan if you are pregnant. Your Lifetime Adoption coordinator will help you create your plan. It will outline who will be in the delivery room, who will be the first to hold the baby, and other hospital stay details. Your coordinator will then share your plan with the hospital staff and adoptive family so everyone knows their role. You will also have a Massachusetts adoption attorney available at no cost to you. Your attorney will protect your rights, and make sure you fully understand the legalities of the adoption.

Open Adoption in Massachusetts
Most people don’t truly understand open adoption. These days the birth mother makes the decisions. The birth mother chooses who the adoptive family and what kind of updates she would like to have in the future. A Lifetime Adoption coordinator will create an adoption plan for you and your baby. She will ask for information such as:

  • What race or faith are you looking for in a family?
  • What type of contact would you like with the adoptive family in the future?
  • How do you see your hospital experience going?
  • Do you have pregnancy-related financial needs?

Adoption can be the most loving and brave choice you can make for your child. It will comfort you to know that adoption no longer means you have to say goodbye forever. Open, modern adoption, means you will know your child is happy and healthy because you can receive pictures, updates, and even occasional visits. Many birth mothers have close relationships with their baby’s adoptive families. Not too long ago, one of our amazing birth mothers was getting married, and she asked if her daughter would want to be there. She was not only there, but the adoptive parents were there as well, and the adoptive father even walked the bride down the aisle.

Help With Pregnancy Expenses and More
Nicky contacted Lifetime and told a coordinator when she was thinking she should place her baby for adoption. There were addiction issues and she did not want her baby to grow up in this environment. Now she had pregnancy-related expenses and did not know how to handle them. Her Lifetime coordinator shared with her that in the state of Massachusetts, pregnancy-related expenses may be handled by the adopting parents. While this is not outlined in the statutes your Massachusetts lawyer can determine what can be covered and what cannot.

Adoption Laws in Massachusetts
Massachusetts adoption laws can seem hard to understand, but don’t worry. Your Lifetime Adoption coordinator will refer you to an adoption attorney in Massachusetts who will handle the adoption legal aspects.

In Massachusetts, the timeline for legal documentation for adoption is as follows.

Consent to adoption cannot be executed until four days after the birth and is irrevocable upon execution.

Like every other state, Massachusetts has its own laws that must be followed before the finalization of the adoption.

Massachusetts Home Studies
A home study is a legal document required by every state and territory which presents proof that the adoptive parents have the ability to parent and care for a baby or child. Your Lifetime Adoption coordinator will recommend a qualified home study provider in Massachusetts.

With a home study, be prepared to provide the following and other documentation:

  • A check for any criminal convictions or abuse or neglect of a child, or incidents of domestic violence for anyone in the home ages 14 or older
  • Emotional stability and compatibility
  • Education and health histories
  • Family make up, including pets
  • A description of the home, including sleeping arrangements
  • Parenting ability, including plans for child rearing and discipline
  • At least three written references
  • A written statement from a doctor regarding the health of each member of the household
  • Documentation of birth certificates, marriage certificates, and/or divorce decrees
  • Show financial ability to care for an adopted child
Whether you want to know more about adopting or are a parent considering placing your child for adoption, Lifetime Adoption is ready to guide you and provide all the information and support you need for a successful adoption journey.
