Adoptive Families

If adoption is the right choice for you and your baby, you will work with a coordinator who will walk you through the process and help you choose a family or families to speak with. Check out Lifetime adoptive family profiles. You may be looking for a family from Montana or you may want a family of a certain faith or lifestyle. These choices are all yours unless you prefer a coordinator chooses for you. It’s important to know that if you are parenting a toddler or older child and it is a struggle, adoption isn’t just for newborns. Your Lifetime coordinator will help you create an adoption plan for your baby or child. A professional counselor will work with you to create a transition plan for you, your child, and the adoptive family. Together you will create a post-adoption contact agreement that is healthy for everyone involved, most importantly, the child.

Hospital Plan

Another important part of the adoption process is the hospital plan. Your Lifetime Adoption coordinator will help you outline your wishes, such as who will be in the delivery room with you, who will be the first to hold the baby first, and other hospital labor and delivery details. She will then inform the hospital staff and adoptive family of your plans so everyone knows their role. You will also have a Montana adoption attorney available at no cost to you. Your attorney will make sure your rights are protected, that you fully understand the legalities of the adoption, and will handle the legal paperwork and court hearing.

Open Adoption in Montana

Open adoption is not a topic many people truly understand. Today the birth mother makes all the decisions. The birth mother chooses who will adopt her baby and what kind of contact there she would like to have in the future. You will have a Lifetime coordinator who will create an adoption plan for you and your baby. She will ask for information such as:

  • What race or religion are you looking for in a family?
  • What type of contact do you see yourself having with the adoptive family in the future?
  • What do you see your hospital experience being?
  • Do you have pregnancy-related expenses you need help with?

There are situations where the most loving and brave choice you can make for your child is adoption. It can be a comfort to know that open adoption means you don’t have to say goodbye forever. With open, modern adoption, you will know your child is thriving and happy because you can receive pictures, updates, and even occasional visits. Many of our birth parents have close relationships with their baby’s adoptive families. Recently, one of our birth mothers was getting married, and she asked her daughter to be there.  She was not only there, but the adoptive parents were there as well, and the adoptive father even walked the bride down the aisle.

Adoption Laws in Montana

Montana adoption laws can seem hard to navigate, but don’t be concerned. Your Lifetime Adoption coordinator will recommend an adoption attorney in Montana who will handle the legal aspects of the adoption.

In Montana, the timeline for legal documentation for adoption is as follows:

  • Consent to adoption cannot be executed until 72 hours after the birth.
  • Once consent is executed and parental rights are terminated, they cannot be revoked unless previous agreement allows it.

Like every other state, Montana has its own laws that must be followed before the finalization of the adoption. Montana adoption laws mandate that there must be an evaluation six months after the placement of the child. Every adoption is unique, so rely on your adoption attorney for the information and regulations regarding your particular adoption.

Montana Home Studies

A home study is a legal document required by every state and territory which presents proof that the adoptive parents have the ability to parent and care for a baby or child. Your Lifetime Adoption coordinator will recommend a qualified home study provider in Montana.

With a home study, be prepared to provide the following:

  • A check for any criminal convictions or abuse or neglect of a child, or incidents of domestic violence
  • Medical and social history along with current health status
  • Ability to financially support a child
  • Awareness of potential adoption issues, including matters relating to open, interracial, and special needs adoptions

There will be a post-placement visit at six months. Once this is completed, the adoption finalization can occur.

Whether you want to know more about adopting or are a parent considering placing your child for adoption, Lifetime Adoption is ready to guide you and provide all the information and support you need for a successful adoption journey.
