When you’re considering adoption for your baby, you have the chance to personally connect with families who are hoping to adopt. This meaningful part of the adoption process puts you in the driver’s seat, giving you the space to learn and ask questions before any decisions are made. Through open, heartfelt conversations with hopeful adoptive parents, you can ask whatever is on your mind: their values, how they spend their days, and what kind of home they’d create for a child. It’s your opportunity to get a real, genuine feel for who they are: their family life, their traditions, what brings them joy, and what they hold closest to their hearts.
I asked Michael and Beverly some fun questions that you won’t find in their adoption profile, and I learned that they are grounded in their Catholic faith and have a deep devotion to family. With Beverly’s gentle, nurturing spirit as an award-winning artist and art teacher and Michael’s charismatic, sports-loving energy and tech-savvy mind, they bring a beautiful balance of talents and tenderness to everything they do, and they’re ready to pour all of it into raising a child.
1. What is your favorite thing to cook or eat?
Michael: My family comes from Cajun roots, and we love a good crawfish boil with some boudin and gumbo. My late grandpa, Deryl, had a gumbo recipe that has been passed down throughout the years. We make it at least a few times a year.
Our crawfish boils and gumbo gatherings are not only delicious but also sentimental. Every gathering for birthdays, graduations, or just to see each other brings memories of family and fun we always cherish.
2. As parents, what is something specific you want to teach your child?
We hope to teach our children the value of healthy communication one day. Being able to communicate openly and safely with one another has been integral to our marriage. It is a skill that we believe is truly undervalued and underappreciated today.
We hope to raise a child who can express their feelings to us. We want to know how they feel, ask them why, and then work with them to identify a potential solution. Nobody should feel like they are on an island and can’t talk to their parents.

3. What is an important life lesson you’ve learned?
We are high school sweethearts, so we have seen a lot of life and been through so many transitions and phases of life together. Whenever we are asked what our biggest lesson learned or marriage tip is, we always say, “Don’t sweat the small stuff.”
We have had the luxury of having time as our best teacher, giving us perspective on what really matters and what doesn’t. We don’t worry about little inconveniences or argue about day-to-day things, because we’ve been through enough of the really hard times to know that most things just aren’t worth stressing or fighting over.
4. What is something from your childhood that you want to make sure your child gets to experience?
We are both very lucky to have come from big, loving families who have always put family first, and we definitely want to instill that in our children and make sure they get to experience it. Our families were big advocates of having dinner together every night, taking trips, and having family game nights.
We were both blessed with getting to experience true family life as children. Michael’s family always got together with their grandparents on Sundays; Beverly’s dad coached her and all of her siblings in basketball; Michael’s dad taught the kids all of his favorite board games; Beverly’s mom made a cake from scratch for every birthday, etc. We want to continue on what they did for us and show our child that family comes first and that they will always be there for you.
5. What is something you are naturally talented with?
Beverly: I have always loved art and creating things, and specifically, always wanted to write and illustrate children’s books. I have been involved in art classes my entire life and have an MFA in Children’s Book Writing and Illustrating.
My main medium is oil paint; it’s quite a process and takes forever, but I find so much beauty in its slowness and depth. I have several picture books that I am currently trying to get into the publishing world, and while it would be amazing if it works out, for me, art and writing are something I would continue with forever, even if I am never traditionally published. The joy is in the journey and the storytelling!
