5 Fun Facts About Wisconsin Adoptive Family Cody and Harlie

by | Dec 27, 2022 | Birth Parent Blog

Hopeful adoptive parents Harlie and Cody tending to their gardenI recently had the opportunity to chat with hopeful adoptive parents Cody and Harlie from Wisconsin. Expectant mothers have the opportunity to speak with waiting families before they make their decision, but sometimes it’s nice to just get a little more info to understand who they are.

I asked them some fun questions that you won’t find in their adoption profile, and I learned that they are an active, young Christian couple and are excited to start their family through adoption! As Cody and Harlie put it, “We both have secure, flexible careers that allow for ample time off and have made us financially stable. We look forward to providing your child with a high-quality education, sharing with them the importance of having dinner together, supporting their passions, and teaching them about their heritage.”

1. What is something you are naturally talented with?

Harlie loves to paint nature scenes of the Wisconsin Northwoods. She teaches classes for kids and adults and sells her work locally and to a hospital system in the Midwest. She also helped start an arts camp for kids at a university when in college.

Cody is a naturally talented woodworker. He’s made quite a bit of the furniture in our house – including our tables, side tables, and entertainment center. In addition, Cody loves teaching woodworking – including to our nephew, as they recently built a step stool together.

We’re excited to share our hobbies and learn new ones when we adopt!

2. What’s your favorite fast-food chain? What do you usually order?

We are big fans of Culvers. We live in a rural area – and thankfully, Culvers is the nearest fast-food chain to our home. We don’t eat out often, but when we do, we enjoy Culvers as the food is fresh, and Harlie is a big fan of their custard.

Harlie gets a chicken sandwich and a mini concrete mixer with hot caramel and brownies. Cody loves Culver’s mushroom and swiss burger. In his opinion – Culvers has the best fries!

Our Goldendoodle Mango loves joining us in the drive-through since she also gets a dog treat from the Culvers crew.

3. What is your ideal vacation?

Our ideal vacation is one our family can join us on – including our dog, Mango! Our next scheduled trip is this summer to the north shore of Minnesota. We will be renting a cabin on the shore of Lake Superior with family and will spend our time hiking to waterfalls, seeing a local black sand beach, and playing games at the cabin.

We’re eager to take our new family member(s) with us on family trips. Then, as they get older, we can take them on trips we’ve wanted to take – such as Norway, Alaska, or Harry Potter World.

4. What is your greatest accomplishment so far?

A couple of years ago, we paid off our home!

This was a huge goal for us as we knew that by having no debt, we would be able to – as the saying goes – “live like no one else so we can live and give like no one else.” This has given us a lot of peace of mind and allows us to focus on other things, such as travel, experiences, and giving.

When we adopt, we look forward to teaching our kiddo how to be a good steward and supporting them in their endeavors.

5. What is something from your childhood that you want to make sure your child gets to experience?

Both of us have fond memories of camping and traveling with their family. Cody remembers when his parents would say they were taking them somewhere boring and then surprise him and his brother by pulling up to a waterpark or a campground.

We would love to have our child experience camping and going on spur-of-the-moment adventures with us. We recently fixed up a 1976 retro camper we are excited to go camping in with our family!
