Starting the Adoption Process

It’s quite easy to get the adoption process started. Just fill out our short online application. It is free to apply, and you are not obligated in any way by filling out the application. Once you are pre-approved, a Lifetime coordinator will contact you and explain the adoption process. You will be given access to the Lifetime membership site and information on how to create your personal profile for birth mothers to view. You will also be given referrals for your home study and access to the education you need in the form of blogs, podcasts, webinars, and other resources.

Colorado Adoption Laws

The laws governing each state can often be confusing and Colorado adoption laws are no different. However, your adoption coordinator will recommend a Colorado adoption attorney who will walk you through the legalities of adoption in Colorado.

The timeline for legal documentation in Colorado adoptions is as follows:

A birth mother may give up her child after she is discharged from the hospital or she may sign at anytime after the child’s discharge if the birth mother is found to be competent.
The birth parents’ consent may be given before birth, but may not be submitted to court until 4 days after birth.
In order to revoke consent, the birth parents must show fraud or duress within 90 days of placement.

A home study is required by every State before the finalization of the adoption. Colorado may have different legal requirements depending on each adoption’s facts. Depend on your Colorado adoption attorney to make sure all legal requirements are followed.

With a home study, be prepared to provide the following:

The physical and mental health, moral integrity, and emotional stability of the adoptive parents
The ability of the adoptive parents to care for the child
Confirmation that the adoptive parents have participated in adoption counseling if the court feels it is necessary
A fingerprint-based criminal history records check on adoptive parents and any adult residing in the home
A check for any substantiated reports of child abuse or neglect in each State in which the adoptive parent or adult household member has resided for the past five years
