Modern, open adoption is not something many people know much about. People don’t know that when you choose adoption today, the birth mother makes all the decisions. For instance, you choose the adoptive family and decide what kind of contact you would like to have in the future with the adoptive family and your child. Your coordinator will work with you to create an adoption plan for you and your baby. She will find out:

  • Do you want a family who lives near you or not?
  • What kind of contact do you see yourself having with the family in the future?
  • Would you like a family of a certain faith?
  • Do you need help with pregnancy-related expenses?

There is no more loving and brave choice than placing your child for adoption and there is a family for every child who is loving and excited to grow their family through adoption. Today with open adoption, you will know you are not saying goodbye to your child forever, you can receive pictures, updates, and even visits. Many of our birth mothers and adoptive families have close relationships. Recently, one of our amazing birth mothers was getting married, and she asked if her daughter to be there. She was not only there, but the adoptive parents were there as well, and the adoptive father even walked the bride down the aisle.

Adoption Laws in Arkansas

Arkansas adoption laws can seem hard to navigate but don’t worry, your Lifetime Adoption coordinator will refer you to an Arkansas adoption attorney who will handle the legal aspects.

In Arkansas, the timeline for legal documentation for adoption is as follows.

The expectant or birth mother can sign consent to adopt papers anytime after the birth. A birth father may surrender his parental rights by signing a Waiver of Notice or Denial of Paternity at any time, before or after the child’s birth. The adoption is irrevocable 10 days after the signing or five days after signing if a waiver is signed.

A home study will also have to be completed before the finalization of the adoption. There may be different legal requirements depending on the individual facts of each adoption. Depend on your Arkansas adoption attorney to make sure all legal requirements are followed.

Arkansas Home Studies

A home study is a required, legal document required by all state courts and is meant to show your ability to parent and care for an adopted child. Your Lifetime Adoption coordinator will refer you to a qualified home study provider in Arkansas.

With a home study be prepared to provide the following:

  • Background checks
  • Medical reports
  • Employment verification
  • Visit to the home

Every member of your household over the age of 10 will be interviewed during your home study visit. You will also provide criminal background information and information about why you want to adopt, what your lifestyle is like, what support system you have, what your parenting style is, your education level, and more. You will have two in-person visits, one of which will be in the home. There will also be post-placement visits once a week for a month or until the adoption is finalized.

Whether you are hoping to adopt or are a parent considering placing your child for adoption, Lifetime Adoption looks forward to working with you and providing the information and support you need for successful adoption.
